Monday, February 1, 2010 After dinner, Mark and Arielle and I stared down cakes in the bakery case at the grocery store. For Valentine's Day, they've started selling cupcakes with words spelled out on top of them—they were supposed to read 'Love' in cursive, but one of them somehow came out looking exactly like the word Sex. We ate cake samples and shopped for cookies. Arielle chose stroopwafels, a Dutch cookie I'd never heard of and am now somewhat obsessed with. It's a new favorite. I don't know how they eluded me for so long.
The cake sample had sort of ruined my dessert appetite, which is altogether separate from my real food appetite, but Arielle opened the cookies in the car and reached out to the backseat with two stroopwafels in her hand and when I took them, I was amazed by their weight. My hand sank. They're dense, chewy inside, taste like butter and thick maple syrup.
I've researched stroopwafels (i.e., I've read the Wikipedia page) and my favorite finding is the Dutch band Amazing Stroopwafels. It's the best stroopwafel discovery since discovering stroopwafels!

Waffle on a stick?
Anna! I don't know for sure if you're referencing the waffle on a stick I ate in England or not. But either way, I had completely forgotten about that landmark culinary experience and want to write about it immediately. Somewhere there's a great picture of a few of us eating those things on the boardwalk. I shall find it. Anyway, thanks for reminding me of their existence.
